Airport Adventure SXM

 Airport Adventure SXM

The Princess Juliana International Airport of St. Maarten is one of the most popular attractions on the island of St. Maarten. Not just among plane spotters; thousands of tourists visit the beach of Maho Bay every week. Why? Because this airport is one of few places in the world where you can come this close to planes landing and taking off!

The airports runway is very short, and it ends right at Maho Bay. Here you will be able to experience the very low-altitude landings and feel the tornadic take-offs. It was never this easy to shoot a spectacular picture.

The Princess Juliana International Airport is one of the most popular attractions on the island of St.

With this three hour tour you will be able to enjoy all this in comfort and style. The fully equipped vessel ‘Airport Adventure SXM’ will take you on a scenic boat ride from the dock in Philipsburg along the coast to Maho Bay. Here the boat will stay for a while, moored just off the beach. In this way you are sure you can experience a jet blast without danger. After a full information briefing, the fun can begin. You are free to do what you want: watch the planes land right over your head, relax in a lounge chair, swim, noodle or snorkel – it is up to you! Equipment like noodles and snorkel gear is provided; the certified rescue staff will keep an eye on the designated snorkel area at all times. Also available are floatation devices for weak swimmers and gear in kids’ sizes, which makes this tour very suitable for the entire family! To make sure you won’t miss any planes, flight arrivals and departures will be posted and announced. In the meantime, you can also enjoy the full bar and great food, at modest prices. You can open a tab and pay at your convenience, by cash or credit card. The boat will take you back to the dock in Philipsburg at the end of the tour.

All in all, you will be able to enjoy this #1 attraction in St. Maarten as a First Class Traveler for $65 for adults and $55 for children (5-12 years old). Children under 5 years old go for free.

“So much fun!”

I am surprised by the negative reviews here. Maybe what people don't realize, is that even if you taxi to the beach (as we have done in the past), you don't see the runway. My husband is a pilot, and we specifically planned this excursion because of the cool factor of watching the planes while floating in the ocean! The whole point of this attraction is what fun it is to see the jet blast when the planes take off, as there is no where else you can experience that so close up, let alone on a beach in St Maarten! We've done it from the beach, and so we thought it was ultra fantastic to watch while floating comfortably in the water. The day we went we were able to get in the water, and the crew was great about assisting guests in and out from the deck platform (especially Janelle!!). It was also lots of fun to watch the planes coming in, and the crew did make announcements about where the flights were arriving from, such as France. There were plenty of noodle floats and snorkeling gear (this is not a fish spotting excursion but PLANE watching trip) How could this not be fun?

“Outstanding ”

We've done several snorkeling excursions to the airport by catamarans. This was by far the best. This is a double deck floating party boat. ., with a deck off the side. They put us right in the bay in front of the landing and takeoff strip. Juan announced incoming flights so we could get our cameras ready. The crew was interactive with all the passengers. The bar has beer, soft drinks and great fish sandwiches made to order plus snacks. Be sure to order the Guava berry drink.  What a great day. .

“The most incredible birthday ever!”

We were sailing with a Carnival ship (the Valor, mid-late August 2016), and actually won this excursion in a raffle.
It was already a total shock to have won something, but then my mother and I got to meet this friendly, engaged, and interesting crew!
The little boat (as compared to the Valor) was meant to carry more than a hundred people, but there were only about fifty of us on board. So there was plenty of space both above and below. Most of the visitors were in their 20's, 30's, and 40's but there were some kids (including an adorable toddler that got her first experience with the ocean) and some older folks too: everyone seemed comfortable and happy.
Then we cast anchor in about 20 feet of gorgeous clear water, warm as a summer bath, and got to snorkel around and take photos of the airplanes as they came in. Sure, we could have gotten closer, but I'd rather not get sandblasted!
And yes, what made this trip extra special was that it was within a week of my birthday, but! It would have gotten five stars anyway.
The crew really made the difference.
They were helpful and made an concentrated effort to make sure everyone had a safe and fantastic time! Too many times you go on one of these cruise excursions, and you can tell it is just a job, something to get done, for the guides/drivers/crews, but the SXM people actually care and want to make your experience special. I can not recommend them enough.
Definitely wear walking shoes though! You have to walk a short way to get to the boat, over blazing hot pavement. They offered to take us to the city docks when returning, so if you intend to shop after, double the need for walking shoes. There aren't any lockers, just spaces under the seats to stow your things, and towels are not provided. I didn't see any changing rooms either, so make sure you wear your swimming things, if you intend to get in the water!
